The meeting brought to an end the tenth anniversary of the Task Force during which a UN GA resolution on promoting abrought together 46 participants including representatives from six member organizations (ILO, UNCTAD, UNRISD, UNDP, UNDESA, UNECLAC, and OECD), eleven observer organizations (CIRIEC, EURICSE, EESC, GSEF, Euclid Network, Social Economy Europe, SSE International Forum, RIPESS, CSEND, EMES, Catalyst2030, and ICA). Representatives from UN ESCWA participated for the first time after officially joining the Task Force earlier this month.
The meeting was facilitated by Co-Chairs Simel Esim (ILO) and Chantal Line Carpentier (UNCTAD) and focused on developments which have taken place since the UNTFSSE’s 4th Technical Symposium, held in Montreal in October. These include preparing the UN Secretary General report for the 79th Session of the General Assembly, finalizing and implementing the action plan (2024-26), and resource mobilization.
“We want to know what people are doing on the SSE and this includes things they are doing that might not be called SSE. We hope that our Members and Observers can share the request for inputs with relevant partners and networks around the world because the richer the input we receive, the richer the report will be.” (Chantal Line Carpentier, Co-Chair)
The Co-Chairs presented the draft Action Plan (24-26) for the implementation of the UNGA Resolution for inputs from Members and Observers. Key elements include setting up a process for drafting the UN SG report on the SSE as well as putting in place technical working groups on financing and statistics. The Action Plan will be finalized in the new year after inputs from Members and Observers are received and integrated.
Communications and knowledge-sharing updates were given by various colleagues including Fernando Baptista (consultant) who reported on social media and Ilcheong Yi (UNRISD), who shared about the Knowledge Hub. Simel Esim, announced that the Awareness Raising Modules will now be translated into Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, Turkish, Wolof, Yoruba and Swahili with hopes to disseminate through partner networks.
The next regular meeting of the UNTFSSEE will take place in February 2024.
