The UN Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a side event at the next Committee on World Food Security. It will take place on Friday 17 October, 6:30 pm – 8:00 p.m., Lebanon Room (D-209), FAO, Rome. The topic of the side event is Social and Solidarity Economy for Improved Food Security and Nutrition.
Around the world, millions of rural workers and producers are organizing in self-help groups, cooperatives and other forms of social enterprise in ways that bode well for food security and smallholder empowerment. By coming together as a group, farmers can often increase their bargaining power and negotiate better prices. They develop capacities and realize rights in ways that go hand in hand with measures that promote agro-ecology preserving plant and animal biodiversity, and guarantee social equity and economic viability.
The TFSSE will be represented by FAO (Brave Ndisale), ICA (Stefania Marcone), ILO-COOP (Roberto di Meglio), RIPESS and Urgenci (Judith Hitchman), UNRISD (Sarah Cook) and Via Campesina (Rodolfo Greco).
If you would like to participate, please send us with your full name and organization, at mathei[@]unrisd.org. The entry to the side-event is free. Unfortunately, we are unable to cover travel costs nor to help with visa applications.
