The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. Its primary objective is to contribute to the economic and social development of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) at ECLAC
ECLAC joined the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (TFSSE) in April 2014 and has recently made contributions to the document titled “Social and Solidarity Economy and the Challenge of Sustainable Development”.
Several divisions of ECLAC have worked on the subject of social and solidarity economy (SSE). The Social Development Division, for example, implemented the project Experiences in Social Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean with the support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. This project served to identify and reward innovative experiences, precisely in relation to SSE issues.
The Production, Productivity and Management Division has conducted studies on SSE models, in relation both to urban SMEs and to rural and agricultural development. Special importance has been afforded to public policies in this regard.
